Why Are My 4x6 Shipping Labels Printing Crooked?
There is nothing more frustrating than printing a shipping label only to find that the entire 4x6 label is crooked, shifted to one side, or partially cut off. If your 4x6 shipping labels are printing crooked, the problem may not be your labels at all.
The good news is that most 4x6 label printing issues are easy to fix. Here are seven things to check before replacing your printer.
1. Check Your Label Size Settings
Start with the simplest possible cause: your printer may not be receiving the correct label dimensions.
Your shipping label should be set to 4 x 6 inches in your printing or shipping software. If the document is set to Letter, A4, or another size, the printer may scale or reposition the label.
Check both the page size and print settings before printing again. If there is an option such as “Fit to Page” or “Scale to Fit,” turn it off when printing a standard 4x6 shipping label.
2. Load the Labels Straight
A label roll or fanfold stack that is slightly off-center can cause labels to feed at an angle.
Open your thermal printer and make sure the labels are sitting straight inside the guides. The guides should hold the media securely without squeezing it too tightly.
If the first label enters the printer crooked, every label that follows may also be misaligned.
3. Calibrate Your Thermal Printer
Thermal printers use sensors to detect where one label ends and the next begins. When the printer loses track of the label gaps, it can feed too far, stop too early, or position the print incorrectly.
Running a thermal printer calibration can help the printer recognize the size and spacing of your 4x6 labels.
Calibration methods vary by printer, so check your printer's instructions for the correct procedure.
4. Select the Correct Media Type
Some thermal printers have different settings for continuous media, labels with gaps, and black-mark labels.
If your printer is set to the wrong media type, it may not detect the beginning and end of each 4x6 label correctly.
For standard shipping labels with a gap between each label, make sure the printer is configured for the appropriate gap or die-cut label setting.
5. Check the Printer Driver
Your computer's printer driver can also affect alignment.
Make sure you have selected the correct printer model and that its settings match the physical labels you're using. An outdated or incorrect driver may cause unusual scaling or positioning problems.
If the problem started after changing computers or printer software, check the driver settings first.
6. Clean the Label Sensor and Print Path
Dust, adhesive residue, and other debris can interfere with a thermal printer's sensors. This can affect how the printer detects your 4x6 labels.
Turn off the printer and follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Avoid using anything that could damage the printhead or internal components.
Regular cleaning can also help maintain consistent printing quality.
7. Test With Another Pack of 4x6 Labels
If everything looks correct but labels are still crooked, try another roll or stack of 4x6 thermal labels.
A damaged roll, uneven backing, or poorly wound media can cause feeding problems. Testing another pack can quickly tell you whether the issue is with the printer or the labels.
