Can You Reuse a 4x6 Shipping Label? What Happens If You Print Over It?

If you ship products regularly, you may have wondered whether you can reuse a 4x6 shipping label instead of printing a new one. Perhaps a package was returned, an order was cancelled, or you simply want to save a label.

The short answer is that reusing an old shipping label is usually not a good idea.

Why Can't You Simply Reuse a Shipping Label?

Once that package has been processed, the information on the label may no longer apply to a new shipment. Even if the address is the same, the tracking information could be different.

A reused label can therefore cause confusion when the package enters a carrier's sorting and scanning system.

The safest approach is to create and print a new shipping label whenever a new shipment requires one.

What Happens If You Print Over an Old Label?

Printing a new label over an existing one may seem like a simple solution, but the old barcode can remain partially visible.

Barcode scanners are designed to read patterns accurately. If an old barcode is visible around the edges of the new label or if the new printing does not completely cover the old information, a scanner could potentially pick up the wrong barcode.

This can result in delays, incorrect tracking information, or additional handling during shipment.

What If the Old Label Is Still on the Box?

If you are reusing a shipping box, check it carefully before applying your new 4x6 shipping label.

Remove old labels whenever possible. Also look for additional barcodes, QR codes, tracking stickers, or carrier markings that could be mistaken for the current shipping information.

A clean box with one clearly visible shipping label makes it easier for automated systems and shipping personnel to identify the correct destination.

What About a Label That Was Printed Incorrectly?

If your shipping label has a typo, the wrong address, or another printing error, don't try to modify the existing label by printing additional information over it.

Instead, void or cancel the incorrect label according to your shipping platform or carrier's process, then create a corrected label.

Print the replacement on a fresh 4x6 label and remove the incorrect label from the package.

Ensure to Print a Fresh Label for Every Shipment

Old tracking numbers and barcodes can interfere with the identification of a new package, while feeding used adhesive labels through a printer can cause mechanical issues.

For dependable shipping, print each new shipment on a fresh 4x6 thermal label. A clean label with a clear barcode and accurate shipping information helps create a smoother process from printing to delivery.
